The big deal here is the quick intervew that Sasa did at Quakecon with Tim Willits, chief designer for id Software. Very cool stuff. We also cover your emails, horror games that we dig on, and the very best in video game villians. Throw in a beef call and a clip that made the TV Guide Podcast say, ‘That was the weeniest call ever!’ And a few other goodies in there for good measure.

FEAR is made by Monolith, who are known for good stories. (No One Lives Forever FTW!) I would buy the game regardless of my impression of the demo, but I LOVED the demo.
Ya, I loved the demo too. In contrast to Doom 3, the only other ‘scary’ FPS I’ve played in the last while, F.E.A.R. freaked me out. I’d say, above all else in games, the inability to fight the threat is the scariest thing. I mean, if it can be killed, regardless of how huge, how scary, or how unstoppable it is, all you need to beat it is a save game right before the battle.
Couple with the relative invulnerability of the little girl the really cool placing and timing of her appearances, and the character effects applied when you’re near her, such as quickened breathing, or the motion tracker going all freaky, and you’ve got one intense experience. Although, I think playing with a 5.1 headset and all the lights off did help.
The best way to play horror games is with the lights off by yourself.
I totally agree with everything you said. The only REAL fear is the lack of control.
Monolith has made some really good games in the past., and some total crap ones.
Starting from oldest to newest:
Blood 1 - For the time, a very gory FPS.
Shogo – Mech/Anime style FPS.
Blood 2 – Very gory FPS sequel.
NOLF –
Alien Vs Predator 2 – Great game.
NOLF 2 -
Contract Jack -
TRON 2 – Own it, frigging awesome game.
The Maxtrix Online – HAHAHHAHAHHHAHA. Total crap.
F.E.A.R. – Looks promising.
Condemned: Criminal Origins – Console scary game.
I am shamed to say that I have NEVER played any of the NOLF games.
YOU MUST PLAY NOLF! Those games are why I like Monolith. They are a bit aged, but still worth it. I liked the original better, even. I have yet to play Contract Jack, a spin-off of the NOLF series, though apparently not as good.
The Matrix Online, well… I can’t hold it against them. It’s a licensed MMO. They’re strong on their stories.
NOLF is good, but it doesn’t fit my taste. Contract Jack was worse than the other NOLF and NOLF 2 is the best of the bunch. Blood 1 was better than Blood 2 and had more style, the Blood series are one of my all-time favorites(I don’t know why). AvP2 is the top dog just after Half-Life 2 in my Top 5 of games. F.E.A.R. ahs yet to show it’s true colors…
Hey, Asterix, is it Sasa or Sasha.
No one mentioned Phantasmagoria?
Ok jokes aside, I remember Resident Evil 1 creeping me out seriously the first time I played it at night with the lights out. The hands just popping out from the window and grabbing you made me jump out of my seat.
Clive Barker Undying PC games was also pretty freaky stuff. The soundtrack was very well done and contributed hugely to the spooky environment.
Oh btw Scott. Jean Reno is pronounced Jean as in Jean Paul Gaultier and Reno as rey-no.
Neuroman42: If you like that kind of humour, NOLF 1 is great. That is one of my favourite games. Other favourites that I have are Deus Ex 1 and System Shock 2 (haven’t had the opportunity to play SS1). I thought NOLF 2 was really dull though, but on the other hand I haven’t played the whole thing through.
But you should really check NOLF 1 out.
After reading some of your posts I may have to go back and play the demo again.
One thing that hindered my enjoyment of the game was that I had sound issues. I would be playing and all of a sudden it would get real distorted….I mean like screaching digital sounds…I could pop out of the game and go to the sound settings and adjust them and it would go back to semi-normal with a lot of popping but it sounds like that is where a lot of the creep factor came in which is what I was looking for in this game.

I forgot about NOLF. I loved that game. One of my fave FPS’s of all time.
werent you supposed to do the interview with tom willis ?
Didn’t he say that the interview was made by someone else…
Posted yesterday:
“I am a little beside myself here. Sasa, a great and wonderful and incredible fan of ExtraLife just got back from Quakecon bearing gifts! He actually got an exclusive ExtraLife radio interview with Tom Willits, lead designer at id software! I just heard it and you guys will really enjoy this.
I am completely pumped and amazed that he was able to get these interviews. Along with Tom Willits we get to hear stuff from the Serious Sam 2 folks, the Master Cheif, and loads more! I can’t thank Sasa enough for his fine work. Will get this stuff mashed up asap and on the next show. Will be doing a new show TONIGHT! “
Hey Guys,
My name is pronounced Sasha but it is written Sasa.
That it is the original Slavic way of writing it. There is an accent mark on the second s.
Ok enough about me heh… QuakeCon is a great event not just because it celebrates id’s games but video games in general. There also a bunch of non-gaming related cool events that follow QuakeCon such as the hilarious Mr. Sinus comedy show – http://www.mrsinus.com, QuakeCon Jam (great independent music show), Bawls drinking contest, etc. I highly recommend it to those of you who have never attended it.
