Haha that “lame” canon thing is great. And every single time I listen to ELR while having breakfast you guys will go off on a poo tangent. It’s a law of nature it seems :)

  2. Flamov

Good show. But, Scott, at the PS3 keynote they stated that their controller which they were going to demonstrate was an engineering prototype and no where near the final model.

  3. Scott

Who cares what it ends up looking like. It worked like a charm. That was all I cared about.

    Hey, Scott:

Regarding the grossness of 3D glasses… the first movie of the recent push of films that I saw with 3D, “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” I just kept the glasses. That way, the next time I go in to the theater I don’t have to deal with other peoples’ cooties.

    ffxiv ftw

  6. Shaymus22

  7. Arcanix

I wish you all could be here in LA with me! Due to my employment, not to mention my amazingly kool boss, i was lucky enough to travel to LA for E3 this year. And all i have to say, it’s so much bigger and exciting when you’re really here. I wish i could have come before this year, i never thought that a single event could bring so many great people and games together. I have met up with some great people from companies such as Bungie,Bioware, and Infinity Ward. If any of you have the chance to go, DO NOT PASS IT UP. Well I need to get some sleep in order to prepare for the final day tommorow. But thanks to Scott, Brian, and O, i now have something to listen to on the drive back home. THANKS GUYS!!!

@Arcanix: A snippet from some new stuff from The Crystal Method.

i only vaguely recall learning about this but when/why did they decide to make E3 the spectacle it used to be again instead of that intimate conference setting?

also i damn near cried when i heard the bashes on the beatles and the stones. T_T

My view on the wii at this point is that it’s a great supplemental machine. After all, I’m a HUGE nintendo fanboy, but I know I could not live without my PS3. The wii is that system I have for all the games I grew up with and and my PS3 (and when I eventually buy a 360, that too) is the system that I play games to lose myself on.

I don’t regret buying a wii. I would however regret it if I had gotten it without my PS3

    >.> ELR, you do realize there are going to be quite a bit of games that is going to be bundling the Motion Plus that you could buy to get the adaptar including Red Steel 2 which is a [b]WESTERN[/b]!

    And BBCode doesn’t work , so I look a little stupid. D:

To be honest, I finally had time to sit down and listen to the Podcast on my PSP (because I lost that 40 dollar charger to my iPod) and I must say, I was actually rather appalled.

Usually, I expect at least O to be the rather logical one, but that wasn’t even the case here.

People really need to learn how business works, especially for Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft ARE NOT GAME COMPANIES. Their business is not in games and if they stop doing gaming, they would not go away because their hand was in another jar long time ago. What they have for them is that hand in the other jar. It’s money from their other established ventures that allows them to buy up technology made by OTHER companies and put it into their game systems. THAT’S ALL. If Sony’s motion sensor works better, it’s only because they had more money to give to a company to develop it. Simple as that.

However, on Nintendo’s side, Nintendo AND Sega and many of these other companies came from a simply background. Days when it was JUST them, and the only thing keeping them going was the competition between Nintendo and Sega but NEITHER OF them would get any money beyond the sell of their products. Whatever they got from all those NES or Master years is what fueled the next system and next technology. That unfortunately has not changed for Nintendo. They are a game company, without Sega, they would have had a monopoly. Sony even being in the game is a total accident, and it’s one that is biting Nintendo fiercely in the behind like a bad divorce where your wife gets half your money and uses it to make her own company and fight against you. Sony and Microsoft has BACKUP capital, Nintendo DOES NOT. So yes, they had to take a more Apple approach or face buyout or worse, potential bankruptcy. Whatever they have from this Wii experiment is EXACTLY what they have to take with them to the next level. Can’t make a new system if you have no money to make it and buy the technology to make it with. What if Apple suddenly really did want to jump into gaming, it would be the same thing, because they have capital from their regular business to fuel the system and licenses and technologies.

Really, on a survival of business approach, I think Nintendo best bet IS to join with a company like Apple (maybe even Apple) so they don’t use all their own money which is only coming from the games to continue going. Someone whose business hand is in another jar, so they aren’t losing out on the venture. Nintendo is quite literally why I watch E3 because the truth is they are really the ones with the most to lose. I like to think the Wii is really an experiment to get us ready for what they really would like to try, but to just make it and put it on the market would make it a HEAVY gamble and they are smarter than that. So they put some of the technology that will go into it out into the market and see how people take to it and accordingly.

I mean come on, you didn’t even get high powered system out of gaming BACK IN THE DAY. It was progressive small steps because it wasn’t safe to jump up the way we do now and still really isn’t. That’s why we have a $600 and $400 system. Sony and MS have the money to pool into it that isn’t coming from their games. It also why they really even make first-party games for a long time, they weren’t going to put money into it until it proved lucrative. It was safer to just buy the licenses and let people bring their games to them and they just collect the money. Not the same with Nintendo, everything hinges on their own work, just like all game companies. Look at all these mergers and bankruptcies happening now, how does that not click that Nintendo is in the same danger no matter how successful one of their ventures is?

Of course Sony loss money this year and last, their really expensive to develop system wasn’t selling and they are taking a loss on each one. If they weren’t in this venture though, they wouldn’t be hemorrhaging that money in the first place and they would still have their capital from the other things they do.

You said you hadn’t even really watched the rest of the show by that point, so what about all the things you missed from Nintendo that wasn’t said at the conference or that was coming from third-party (I know for a fact I wasn’t going to get the new Kingdom Hearts game for DS until they finally showed the footage of it and now I definitely am). If anything, E3 discussion should have been next week when everything is out on the table to be known. And all that attacking “gimmicks” and gadgets, are we forgetting that is where gaming was back in the day? Sega did it too, in fact, the Sony Playstation was a gimmick add-on to the SNES. It just ended up the angry love child of two companies that had a violent divorce and mommy keep using the baby to ruin daddy’s life.

Seriously, lay off Nintendo, they know what they’re doing and they know what they can do. Gambles aren’t even really an option, but they don’t have a choice. It’s survival, nothing more simple or basic in the world then the survival instinct. I don’t want to be in a world without Nintendo, they deserve to be here the most, they are the ones pushing people to not be lazy in gaming or in the design and they have the most to lose after 20+ years of history.

  15. Atlantis

    Well said, Shinobi.
