I remember reading Sonic the Hedgehog 2 manual on the home after buying the game as a kid. That and other manuals were sometimes the best part of video games back on the Genesis, N64, and PS. Bringing back memories Scott. *Sigh*
I still re-read Elite : The Dark Wheel novella that came with Elite game for the BBC Micro. The novella really fired up my imagination while playing the game and helped make my own story lines up as I played.
I still have my Wing Commander (2, 3, 4, prophecy) boxes and manuals. I remember reading all the ship specs, and them playing the game thinking “cant wait to fly those broadswords”. I really miss those days, and I really miss wing commander
I had this flashback after I bought StreetFighter 4. Only instructions no bios or anything and then I remembered when I bought the original Street Fighter back in the days. Characterinformation for everyone, every special-move was named and described. It was awesome. Or Tie Fighter I still got the manuel. It was a book with a whole story and in the back a glossar with an entire describtion of the ships, how big they are, what kind of weapons they use, crew who build them etc. It was great Blizzard did at least with their old games the same. Pages of story and art of metzen…
Remember good ol’ Microprose and its games ? Pretty much everyone had a thick manual even that spy–simulator game they had. Civilizations’ made for a pretty decent history-book.
Jane’s Longbow also had a very good & thick manual.
And remember the extra fluff you’d get without having to pay for a ‘limited edition’? I still have the cloth map from Ultima 6.
The manual (and the pretty box the game was packaged in) at least made you feel you had value for your money.

haha, good one Scott.
But why oh why are all of your characters starting to sound like crotchety old men…?

because the standard for becoming crotchety old men keeps getting younger sadly. How many times I’ve caught myself *sigh*
Oh and love me some game manuals. (Assasins Creed’s manual was pretty good in this respect, helped develop the game world quite well)

I really want to ask if the duck is going to be a regular character… but I wont.
Ha! I used to do the exact same thing. Video game manuals were great toilet reading.
