There’s just something about being stuck around a table with overly competitive relatives that just screams family time and no video game has exactly duplicated that yet.
And I too would prefer the actual cardboard over the XBLA version. The physical nature of it it’s half the fun… especially when you get to games with lots of little pieces like Ticket to Ride (or many other board games).
Oh god. Family game night at my girlfriend’s is a nightmare and hilarious at the same time. They love Clue, especially her grandmother, however her grandmother is absolutely terrible at it. She makes totally unfounded assumptions, and it’s hilarious to watch as she guesses totally wrong.
Seeing TTR on here makes me happy. You have good taste in games, Scott! To add to the other suggestions being made here, I’d also go with TransAmerica and, if you’re interested in a deeper and more challenging game, Agricola.
Yep one of the more popular games at the shop where I work. and yeah I’ll agree that if you like it Catan and Powergrid are also good. You might also find that you enjoy the Caracasone series of games.
I love this game! I’ve only played it on Xbox Live, but me and the wife love playing it together. Been planning on picking up the actual board game to play with friends.
Board games are always better if you can get people together to play them. Half the fun is the interaction where early people work together more, then in the last 15 minutes its the ‘holy crap they’re about to win! Stop them!’ Sticking it to your friends= teh awesome
Awesome, glad you discovered this, Scott. I picked it up on a whim about half a year ago when some friends were over and they forgot to bring Catan. We ran out to the local hobby shop and picked this up and it was a hoot. Was glad to see how accessible it was (seems easier to get friends/family to understand this than Catan). – See, all that wonderful snow is good for something. Family time =D
Ticket to Ride is awesome – just got into playing that a few months ago
Settlers of Catan is great as well – not better than TTR they are different games
Carcasonne is another one of our favorites – It has several expansions – dont bother with Hunters and Gatherers (its a separate game from the rest)
Pandemic is a co-operative game that is pretty fun if you can find it
And for podcasts about game – The Dice Tower – great resource for games along with Boardgamegeek
Consoles are great, but sitting down and playing games with the kids is way better. You get much more interaction. Sometimes they get a little too competitive, but then I do something corny and they snap back to reality – its only a game.
Well played, Scott (pun intended).
I haven’t played that one, but my daughters are 13 (twins) and they like the Cranium games, Risk (though my wife is dangerous. Had fun making an alliance against her, then crushing my ally to her horror… Except the next time we played they all allied against me and I had to go to my den -_- )
We have a bunch of the classics like Clue and Sorry, etc. But they also like Civilization, the board game, when we have enough time to play it. THAT game takes FOREVER! I want to get Catan, but they don’t sell it at Wal-mart, and ebay has gotten so sketchy.
I LOVE TICKET TO RIDE~~~~German Style gaming is the only way to go!!!
For those confused by us referencing “German Style” board game Here is what we mean.
-No Player Elimination
-The Game Usually always has a theme for example Trains in Ticket to Ride Or Colony games like Settlers and Puerto Rico ( one of the greatest games ever made) another note to be made is a German Style game will NEVER have a War Theme.
-International Friendly Meaning besides the rules the game uses few or zero words instead the game will use Attractive pieces and cards that display symbols that any culture would recognize.
-Games will range from 30 minutes to a max 1.5 hours(very rare)
-The Game Board and Pieces should be Pleasing to the eye using lots of colors and unique ways to build the board.
-Like any game the best German Style games have innovative Game Mechanics and innovative ways of doing time tested ones like trading or auctions.
-The creator of the game is always credited like an author of a book. The most famous one probably being Klaus Teuber (settlers of catan)
-There are two very notable awards given out every year to the BEST game release these are Spiel des Jahres and Deutscher Spiele Preis. Usually any game with this title on it will be AMAZING.
Best board game ever!
Wookie is right German Style is the best.
Oh but Scott try get the European version it expands on the original fantastically by adding new features, such as tunnels, ferries and stations. It has won so many award. I advise everyone to look at http://www.daysofwonder.com awesome.
I’ve never even heard of this game. How is that possible?
Why settle for this primitive piece of cardboard when you can have a digital version on Xbox LIVE Arcade? It’s the future, man!
There’s just something about being stuck around a table with overly competitive relatives that just screams family time and no video game has exactly duplicated that yet.
Fun game =)

Also, this makes me sad. My dad is a drunk and my mom was always at work so I never had a “family game night”.

Try catan.
The game is much better then trains.
That’s so cute. Good for you Scott.
Got my family Blokus for Christmas. That is going to be a fun day indeed.
I want to try this game someday. I heard it is a decent game.
You should try Power Grid. Excellent board game.
Fun game, the german style ones are great. Alot better than most board games I’ve played.
What, no week long game of Risk for the family? “The Ukraine….. The Ukraine is WEAK!”
That’s a fun game–so is Catan,
but Robo Rally is one of my favorite strategy board games. It has robots!

i bought that game a little while ago really good.
who won?
Judging from the length of the black train, I would say whoever was playing that color won.

Cant stop listening to that song. The game looks fun.

I say walmart because i live in the boonies and that is the only store in 70 miles that sells games. No need to flame me.

I love that when there are songs in Scott’s videos its always Depeche Mode.
