Nearly forgot I filmed this one. Just no nonsense look at the creation of a comic. Have not done one in a while.

Unavailable right when ya post it, that’s a whole new low.

  4. ScottyD

bummer, maybe it will be available later?

  5. Sath31

the muuuusic brings back memories of blood elf starting territory :P

  6. Moobie

Scott, man… you need to do more of those. I love watching you work sir!

    *salutes!*

Does this count as A Sketch A Day?
Does it count you did it awhile ago?
Am I a ‘Jerk of the Moment!’ for asking this?
Just enjoying the sketch a day deal.

  8. Valkyrie

Oh yeah, totally agree with Moobie, if you recorded each comic that would be WAY cool!

Is is much extra work on your part to set it up to record?

  9. loqk

i have always thought a touch screen would be better than a drawing pallet, now i know for sure :-)

Scott, I love watching you work, it’s very inspiring. I’ve begun my own sketch-a-day project to solidify my own technique, thanks to you.

Also I love the quality of the video you put out – what kind of equipment are you using? I’m doing something similar in the near future, and I’m using a Canon HV20 camcorder w/HD tapes.

    Keep up the great work!

Dude that Wacom looks killer, has that changed your work flow a lot. Are you faster/slower? Are you working doing some stuff all digital?

  12. brian_d

Ah.. still the drawing in the outter edges with color before filling in? I guess that habit really is hard to break from a traditional comic method.

It’s great that we finally get to see the Cintiq in action too.

These videos are amazing. It didn’t take me long to figure out it was the gold farming comic.

  14. Redsword

Give us the “inside baseball” report on this, Scott. Which Wacom tablet is it? What camera are you using to film it?

This is so great. You ought to think about doing this web comic thing on a regular basis. Maybe you could have like an extra life in comics…never mind. That will never work.

  15. Sebastiaan

nice sintique! :) hate you now ;)

  16. Eric

Can the same be done in vector art after it is scanned in? (Say, using Illustrator or equivalent… though I haven’t really come across a good equivalent on PC yet.)

The coloring might be awkward and take more time, but the ability to scale it to practically any size might be worth it to me.

  17. TheChao

    That tablet is MAGIC!

  18. Mar

Oh man, words cannot express how much I want a Cintiq! Thou shalt not covet, thou shalt not covet…

  19. Eric

Wow thats fun to watch. That really is amazing looking, especially when you who your tablet. Thats a wonderfull looking device that i so wish i owned. My bamboo is nice, especially since im far from professional, but something like what you have would just be awesome to own.

  20. Ringo

I would have to say this is my favorite thing that webcomic artists do. I LOVE watching these “behind-the-scenes” videos. Fantastic work.

And Brian_d, the coloring technique he uses is actually a way to speed up the process for coloring in large areas with a solid color. He goes around the line art with the color, then using the Photoshop’s Fill function to fill in the rest of the area. All that’s left after that is to clean up the pixel-thin line that is left between the original color border and the mass fill.

  21. Jason

I’m glad it’s working now…and I love it. I agree, do more of these!

  22. Eric S

    That was awesome.

  23. Aron

A tablet AND a cintiq? What kind of dirt did you blackmail Bill Gates with?

  24. Len

Hey, you aren’t using the draw-on tablet. Or are you? I think that’s just a regular Wacom tablet, right?

  25. Laz

what software are u using for your inking? do you do it all in photoshop? or do you do your lineart inking in illustrator? I cant get the same smooth lines out of my tablet (intuos3) in PS as I can in illustrator.

  26. animathias

Been coming to the site for a while, I’ve really enjoyed the podcasts and of course the comics. I think I might of posted once before, I’m not 100% on that.

Anyway, awesome video, you make it look quite easy, haha, for a second there I thought I might take a crack at it. Then I remembered I can’t draw to save my life. Keep up the great work on all things ExtraLife.

  27. Civilmouse

    Awesome Vid!

@LEN Its the Wacom Cintiq 12WX. Just came out a few months ago. It is a draw on screen :) bout $999

@ Laz All done in Photoshop. Yeah, its tough using a reg tablet. Its hard to beat drawing directly on the screen.

  28. Lifeisaglitch

Scott why do you still sketch on paper and ink with mouse..Seems like a wasted Cintiq :)
