Thought I would do another one of these “how it’s done” videos of a recent comic. Been a while. Enjoy. (The final comic.)

I have the exact same computer and a similar animation program, but nowhere near the amount of skill…
thats pretty cool, how long is it when it’s not speeded up?
lol bill, animation program? anyway nice scott
Bill: Not sure what you mean…it’s just Photoshop CS3.
Good question, how long is it unspeeded?
2 or 3 times normal speed I suppose. I picked a percentage of some sort in Final Cut Pro…can’t remember what exactly. Maybe next video I will show the contrast so people can see the difference.
Sorry for the confusion, Scott:
I meant “animation program” as in graphics/art/drawing software (i.e. Adobe). “Me not too good wif duh Engrish.”
Unfortunately, I cannot currently afford Adobe (thanks a lot, Student Loan Company!), so I tinker with a couple of the free Mac programs I’ve found on the ‘net.
That said, my compliment was genuine. Your artwork is really amazing and watching the process — from sketch to complete — was awesome.
I have a tablet, still can’t draw with it though. Is there some trick? or am I just stupid? Anyway, cool!
Very cool Scott. I’ve been attempting to try out this whole webcomic making junk, and I’ve found it very difficult. This video has showed me a few corners I can cut and make the whole thing faster though. Very helpful.
Now I just need a Wacom.
I enjoyed that. I hope we get to see more in the future.
Yeah, my little pet webcomic that I make has me scanning in pencil versions and inking them on my “Photoshop Open Source Alternative” program, also known as GIMP. Pain in the butt, that is for me. Thankfully, I have gotten some cool ink pens for Christmas that’ll make things quicker and (hopefully) easier for the outlining characters thing.
Nice video, by the way. And after reading the comments, you have Final Cut Pro?!? Lucky dog….
Scott you should look into using a vector based program i think it would be easier for you with that style. Would ruin the inking style you have there though so maybe not
Pretty good. It takes some good sense of volume and proportion to draw silouettes (even cartoon ones) as fast as that… Have you ever tried some more “artistic” stuff? I mean not cartoon-like (like the ones you posted a few weeks ago), but using another medium?
I think for the color fills you’d save time by using the wand (W), then Select > Modify > Expand (Hold Alt then hit S, M, E in sequence, or make an action for it with an keyboard shortcut), type the number of pixes to expand by, and filling (Alt + Backspace). I do this all the time and I’m the biggest Photoshop shortcut and actions fan you’ll ever meet. Use the black ink layer to your advantage. If it’s always directly underneath your color layer, a simple Alt+[ highlights the layer underneath your current one, use your magic wand there, then another Alt+] will take you back to your color layer. Just saying.
Great video.
WOW! you need to video your doing the comic more often!
As an avid ‘toon fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this little “behind the scenes” glimpse! Please do another soon!
I’ve really got to get myself a Tablet.
Thanks for the video, Scott! It’s great to watch these comics getting inked and coloured.
Did you find it a steep learning curve switching to digital inking? I have trouble drawing lines on my tablet, so I only using it for colour.
BTW, I use the same trick the qbix suggested (magic wand/expand using your ink layer) to do colour fills. Works great.
That was fascinating, Scott! It’s always fun to see how other people do that. I agree that more “behind the strip” video would be cool.
You’re awesome.
(PS – When do we get to see and vote on the latest Photoshop contest??)
latest PS content winners coming tomorrow sometime.
Bill, you do know that macosx has a proper bootleg scene? you could just get CS3 for free.
Scott that was awesome! I wish I could draw…anyways, I’d love to see you do more of those!
