Nice conversation, Nick has some really good thoughts for someone of his age. I had conversation like this with my dad back when I was his age, and I still like to go back and think on it sometimes.

But as you said near the end, we won’t know till we get there. So we may as well enjoy life as it comes.

This was very interesting. Death has been on my mind a lot lately, and I liked this entry. It also reminded me of when on Fourcast one of the guests said they’d be able to bring back the dead.

Scott I greatly enjoy your Diary of a Cartoonist. This particular entry hit very close to home having lost so many loved ones in the last few years. I truly think this discussion said it best, you won’t know until you get there so make the best of your time. :) From one artist to another, cheers!

Hey Scott i love your work and all but i thought you weren’t gonna talk about religion and politics on the site. I say who cares what happens when you die, dont try and figure out what will happen to you, just live the best life you can, and be a good person. Otherwise you can drive yourself crazy thinking about what will happen when you die, just life your life. Theres my 2 cents.

Ummm…Did you actually listen to it? You couldn’t have based on what you just said here. Seriously, listen to things before you make some kind of judgment about what’s in it. You end up looking foolish.

Coooper!! (sounds like a sitcom catch phrase, heh, i’m guessing that kid is a handful)

Props on teaching your kid to think for himself but also to respect the thoughts of others, seems rare these days.

Hopefully you didn’t loose someone close to bring these thoughts on.

  6. Precious Roy

I know it was done so we know how old Nick is, but I love the question, “So, how old are you now?”

  7. Roger Clyne

Props to YOUR dad Scott, because it sounds like you have really solid ‘father’ skills. I really enjoy these talks. That’s what its all about taking a walk with your kid during church. Not berating him with a set belief, but encouraging him to think on his own. At first I came here for wow stuff, then I came for movies video games and comics -but its nuggets like these that keep me coming back for more.

hmm.. if only to be young again and have a cheerful perspective on death…

  9. Veko

    This was really good, Scott.

More parents need to be like you. Parents aren’t there to make their kids into little versions of them nor to live out their failed dreams. Parents are there to guide (not dictate) who their child becomes.

Asking him these sort of questions and not telling him some shit like ‘You have to be a good person cause jesus will get mad if you don’t’ is great. It’s important for a child to learn that being nice is a good thing that feels fulfilling, as opposed to being nice to avoid post-life punishment.

My whole point is this: You’re doing it right, Scott. A parent needs to teach their kid how to think, not what to think.

Radio Lab influenced, I’d guess. It’s all they’ve been talking about there.

I see us as an ever-changing arrangement of molecules. In our current form, we call ourselves “alive”… but who’s to say we’re not truly alive in any of our molecules’ other forms. Ah it’s good to be an atheist.

Once again the freakin’ diary almost made me cry, First the whole “The Boy” thing now this. I do have to thank Scott for making me and my wife finally get a living will done.

Just got around to listening. Great stuff! (COOOPER!)

My parents had a similar conversation with me when I was young.
There really should be more parents like you out there (maybe there are, who knows)

  13. Annonymous

This should not be published… It’s a personal talk with your son. I’d be furious if I was nine and my father posted something like this.
