EDIT: Wow…seems you have spoken. Between these comments and my email, looks like the Diary should continue, and continue it will. Thanks for all the feedback!
Driving, thinking, and a big question for you guys.

I really enjoy the short insights into the head of Scott Johnson, and I’m always looking forward to the awsome geekness of Scott and his offspring.
It might be that its not as hot as the Instance or as geeky as ELR, but i would miss it if it never showed up in the blog again
I too enjoy it Scott, hope you keep doing them, maybe it’s because I find joy in the mundane, but it’s neat to hear someone else thoughts on things about their day that often line up with things we all have thought or experienced at one time or another. Oh and I am going to make sure my family hits that dinosaur museum on our next road trip, so that counts for something, right!?
I really enjoy the diary, Scott. It’s really fun to see the personal side of you, and it shows more of you as a person and less as a podcast host. too would miss it if it disappeared. Perhaps the most important question to ask yourself: do YOU enjoy it? If you think it’s stale and you wanna try something else, do something else. I think the Extralife cronies will eat up whatever you do.
I CAN HAZ MUR DIERY?
(Wal-Mart, road construction, and random moments with the family are all relatable.)
I love the diary. I enjoy listening to your thoughts in the form of this diary. I look forward to new posts of the diary just as much as I look forawrd to new comics. It is always interesting and thought provoking or it makes you seem a little more human and just like one of us. I for one would be sad to see the diary go away. And I would like to echo Zacko’s comment as well.
I enjoy the diary. I listen t it for the same reasons I read blogs. Except this is nice because I don’t have to read it. I don’t know how much I like the family stuff. I almost feel intrusive listening to those parts. But that’s just my weirdness comming out.
To me, part of being a “creative” isn’t just what you do creatively, it’s also part of how you live your life. The geeky, silly, and “pointless” things on the Diary are an awesome insight of an inspiring creative. I, agree with the fellow readers above: keep the diary. Rock on Scott.
Definitely keep this running. It’s cool to hear some everyday American stuff, for someone in Europe like me.
I have to admit that when I started to listen to the diary I was thinking, this is ELR with no O.. but then I started enjoin it.. and is something extra and interesting plus random moments are always great..
–
I totally did the pylons thing too, and while there was that silence .. though you should do it and you did.. that made me happy.
I am a fan of the diary, so keep it going. It brings you closer to the listener, seeing the more day to day stuff that you wouldn’t necessarily talk about on ELR/blog/etc. It makes you seem more like a normal person rather than the internet superstar that you are.
Hey Scott,
I truely do enjoy these little peeks into your life. I think it is important for people to see who you are outside of ELR and The Instance. It reminds your listeners that you are indeed human, with a real human life. The diary is probably the best way for your listeners to relate to you and the real life things you have to deal with (i.e. family, children, work, etc.)
So yes, I would really be sad if it went away, please keep it going! =D
-Bill
I listen to the diarys when ever you post them.
The subjects aren’t always as relevant to my interests (I’m not married with children and living in Utah) but neither are all of your cartoons or all of your other blog posts.
I am on the “Oh yeah, it’s not really my thing and (I) just listen because you know it’s … whatever (my) reason is” side of this.
The diary is not meaningful but that doesn’t mean it’s a waste.
Just like every other diary ever.
It’s a good idea as long as *you* think it’s a good idea.
Don’t make your decision on whether or not anyone is listening.
Post them or don’t post them, it doesn’t matter, but keep recording!
No, don’t stop. This podcast is really a highlight for me when it comes out. It has inspired my own podcasting. I feel like we get a better view of your life rather than your interests through the diary. It’s good stuff.
Please don’t stop!
I love this. I really like figuring out how people work, and this is an amazing look into how Scott Johnson works. It’s also fun to hear the little blips with the family. It makes me feel a little more normal about my family and how geeky we are, since I now know that we aren’t the only ones!
I, personally, would want you to keep the diary. ( ‘nough said)
but all these “Don’t stop” things are making me want to listen to Don’t Stop Believin’… xD
I enjoy it. It is fun to listen to as I think it gives a little different insight in what you are thinking and doing. I typically listen at work during lunch when they come up. It is something different, so please keep them going.
I enjoy the diaries. I’m a writer and ex-communications/PR person, and ways of building a public persona fascinate me. I agree with what others have said: IMO the little bits of unstructured conversation and insight add a lot to the connection your fans feel with you. Keep it up!
Cheers
Colin
I like The Diary, please continue makin’ them.
-Q
Keep them coming, Scott!
I definitely like the diary…but I must point out that if we are listening to it (which we have to in order to know that you want us to leave a comment) then we are probably already fans….
Please dont stop doing this. I freaking love DOAC.
Naw dawg, diary of a cartoonist is pretty fly.
Keep doin’ it man, you has full support of me.
Please keep doing the diary; I enjoy getting a snapshot into ordinary life on the other side of the world that hasn’t been sanitised, networkised or otherwise packaged for quality, but is a good honest view of life in middle America. Also, I appreciate some of the insights you have shared over the years; particularly things about parenting and family.
Keep up the good work – please!
It’s like an awesome little treat when I turn on my ipod and there lies a new Diary. They’re little snippets of reality that you won’t find outside your own experiences.
Dont stop.
I listen to all your stuff. I listened to all the Instance, even though I don’t play WoW. Being a concept artist I have a lot of work that goes well with listening to podcasts, so I just grab everything you throw at us- I enjoy your way of thinking enough to find most of the stuff your brain conceives interesting
.
So I say: do the diary. Do it often. You visibly (or rather audibly) enjoy it
I also enjoy the diary greatly. But I really do miss the early video entries when you would talk about you cartooning process. Would love to see something like that again once in a while.
I love the diaries! Keep em coming! I wouldn’t actually mind more of them if at all possible. It’s our window into your life and whats going on. Also you seem to be enjoying it so keep em coming as long as your enjoying them.
I will be entirely honest and serious – This podcast makes me feel connected to you in the same way that I strive to feel connected to the people on Facebook and twitter. It’s a piece of your life; a window across the vast distance between Concord and Eagle Mountain. In nonphysical terms, you are in a different place than I am in so very many ways: emotionally, economically, in terms of what your life is like at home, your goals, your value system…the list goes on. You’re where I want to be when I’m your age. My dad is even at a different point than you, and when he was your age I wasn’t paying attention. The diary is like being teleported into the passenger seat of your car, or in whatever you call that room in which you produce so much of that content we all know and love. Beyond that, it’s also undeniable proof that there are other people out there in this great big world. It still blows my mind that I can hear the voice of someone across the freaking continent in the same way that I stare at planes as they fly by in wonder, even though I’ve lived close to an airport my entire life, including (by coincidence) now that I’m in college.
You wanted my thoughts, you have them. With each and every diary you do, you prove to me that people exist outside of my family that aren’t focused only on drugs and/or alcohol and aren’t lame/dumb/immature/boring/ridiculous.
To be honest, I didn’t know this podcast existed until today. I thought “The Instance” was it… and why don’t you have ‘extra life radio’ as a downloadable mp3?
I enjoy listening to Diary of a Cartoonist. I find it to be an insightful podcast. It sounds as if maybe you don’t feel like doing it anymore, which I would be fine with too, but if you enjoy it, and you just want to know if it has a real audience, I have to say that it has.
Looking forward to the next Diary,
David
Scott, you are the only podcaster i listen to and i really enjoy The Instance and ELR but sometimes i just like to listen to something not WoW related (especially when i have played for 6-8 hours straight, which i sometimes do) so its nice to be able to listen to something that takes me mind away from WoW. As long as you keep making Diary, Ill keep listening too it.
I’ve been listening to your diary for a little over a year, and the few times it updates I look forward to it. I’ve read your comic before but I’m not a regular reader and I don’t listen to The Instance, or anything else gaming related, but when you record your diary, I feel like I’m listening to another artist talk about the things he thinks about and if I haven’t already I think about them myself. I feel a connection with you in that way, and it’s nice to know that we think about more than art and comics and that we are looking for deeper meanings behind the little things in life that we’re grown attached to.
I do enjoy the Diaries (Diaris? Diarrhea’s? Daquiri’s?) and try to listen to them when they come out on your site. It’s not about ELR stuff (sorry, I don’t listen to the Instance because I don’t play me some WoW), it is about the insights into the making of all of it. It’s about the community, and how you relate to others. (“you” being the group, not “you” as in SJ) I’m a podcaster and blogger, work fulltime, have a wife and two kids, trying to create a new blog project, and juggling all of them at once.
For me personally, I listen to hear how you get through the ups and downs of all of your many projects, family and jobs. I turned 40 a few months back, moved to a rural part of my state (yes, Jersey still has some), and weigh the different projects and whether they should continue or not. Without sounding goofy or anything, it’s just nice to me to be able to relate to someone and get inspiration from them.
Keep it up, and just remember, if some say they don’t want you to, then they simply can not listen. If it’s something you want to do, then don’t let anyone influence you differently. It’s good stuff.
Maybe you should do diaries on how you come up with your comics and ideas. Not to say that these are bad or anything but just something that more people would be interested in.
Scott please dont take the beloved diary away! its great to be able to hop into someone else’s mind for a few minutes, and hearing about your family allways makes me smile and feel all happy inside cuz i know im gonna have a big happy family just like yours one day and hopefully a nice graphic design job like yours too
keep up the good stuff! and get more pylons to shut that guy up!
I like listening to the diary, please continue with it
It’s relaxing listening to you talk about everyday things and situations. Like listening to a friend talking about everything and nothing…
I enjoy just listening to what goes on in other people’s lives. I’ve always been a “people watcher” when I go out in public because I find it interesting. The diary is a “people watching” excercise on a whole new level. Not a lot of people these days are that candid.
Anywho, I enjoy them and would love more!
I second all the positives! Keep it going!
DoaC might be my favorite podcast you do. The shorter format and its (somewhat) more serious nature provide a welcome balance to the rest of the site. I enjoy hearing what you think about various subjects. Regardless of whether or not I agree with you, your points are always laid out logically & respectfully. Sadly, that is a very rare thing on the web. Your site picks me up every day, because it’s just a fun place to be. DoaC presents me with a different point of view and causes me to think and reflect on life. By the way, your positive outlook is contagious.
You always have a dozen projects up your sleeve. If it’s time to let DoaC go, we’ll all understand and look forward to what’s next. I just hope that you’ll continue to address some of these same topics, even if in another format.
Thanks, Scott!
Hey, Scott,
I really like the diary entries. As an artist myself, it’s nice to hear the thoughts of someone else doing the same thing. It’s just part of being human to want to know about other peoples’ lives (look at the popularity of Twitter). Plus, it would be a shame for you to pass up this entire form of media to further embarrass your teenage children.
) We like hearing about soccer games and school projects. We, the listeners of the diary, may be “few” but we are faithful.
Scott, I really enjoy your diaries; I find them interesting and compelling. Please continue to do them; I actually find them just as, maybe even more so, enjoyable then your other podcasts.
Dave
I very much enjoy the diaries. ‘Nuff said.
hey dude!
I love this podcast. I love hearing the insights on your life and your day. I am a father and love hearing you talk about your kids and issues that come up. Please keep doing this podcast!!! In fact, I love lovee to hear more of these podcasts!!!
Take care and thank you for this wonderful show!
I am for it!
Seriously… don’t stop. Keep the good stuff flowin’. It’s refreshing to hear a different perspective and musings. To quote Red Green, “Keep your stick on the ice. We’re all in this together.”
Just seems like it’d be a shame to lose a show with such little over head with so much value. :/ I’d have to make a /mourn macro to spam with.
Looks like it’s been said many times, but I really like the Diary podcasts. I hope you don’t stop!
Hey Scott you should keep em coming its nice to get some kinda behind the scenes stuff or random thoughts or spy cam action during party’s lol
love it keep it going
I think you know that if I thought there was little value, I’d say so. I don’t want your geek cooking podcast to return. I don’t want your relationship podcast to return.
.
THIS one is of great value, and although it is small, I enjoy it as much as or more than ELR or The Instance, depending on your guests there.
.
It’s small like your comic. It’s kind of a comic sized podcast in audio form.
.
When I have a full iPod of podcasts to flip through, I will listen to Diary of a Cartoonist before anything else… and I have heavy hitters on my podcast list. It’s like the cream on the top of my podcast mocha.
@Broadcloak What? Dude. I post every ELR we ever make. You are kidding, right?
Yes i Enjoy it Alot keep doing it
