road-work-ahead

EDIT: Wow…seems you have spoken. Between these comments and my email, looks like the Diary should continue, and continue it will. Thanks for all the feedback!

Driving, thinking, and a big question for you guys.

    Scott,
First time listening to the recorded diary today while I was sitting here at work. Funny that the first one is the one you ask for people’s opinions. To be honest it was a breath of fresh air hearing someone actually share something on a blog. That was the original purpose last time I heard and I’m so sick of people using their blogs for nothing more than a personal bookmark sharing service. I like all the work you produce and it’s quality is a real icon of your passion for your work.
I don’t care if you record yourself eating cereal in complete silence short of the sound of the metal spoon clinking against the bowl. In this fast paced world of character limited social networking; this is exactly what reminds people that you’re one of us.

Can’t express how much I love the Diary. It is awesome.

  3. Joshua S. Hill

While I know you’ve already made your determination, I just wanted to add (having just listened to Diary) that I really want you to keep this podcast. I love the mundane look into someone elses life, especially someone from across the other side of the world. And your family is awesome so … yeah, keep the Diary Scott!

  4. ScottyD

    I enjoy the Diary.

  5. Drak

I don’t visit every day (work keeps me too busy sometimes Boo!), but I love visiting your diary. It’s zany, off-beat and makes me laugh. And it’s nice to hear another Dad (probably in the same age bracket as me) talk about their family and life in general.

  6. Alex

More Diary, you ask? In short, do like the Captain and Make it so!

    Yes I went there. :D

  7. noah

I think the diary is great for a couple of reasons.

1.) it’s just you. it’s kind of what is on your mind and a heart. from anything like watching your kids play sports or video games to the common everyday problems people have.

2.) the shared experiences. as a person it’s always good to know that people in other states and countries still have the same experiences. how do i be a good dad? how do i be a good husband? what about my health? my job is kind of stressing me out. things like that.

Out of all the podcasts you do I would I find myself most excited when I get a new one of these more so with the instance and elr.

  8. mark

I really enjoy the short entries. When I see a new one pop up into my podcast I go for it immediately. Its inspiring to see the little blurbs of information that I find myself thinking about at times and its just nice to see others share. It is also nice to hear the family clips you put in from time to time just feels like something real. Not best with words but please continue to do them.

    Take care

  9. Dave

Hey Scott, I’ve been a listener of ELR for over a year now and just recently started playing WoW b/c of the Instance (lvl 37 Warrior).

As a family man myself I enjoy your tidbits on family life and random musings. It adds a human dimension to the superstar that is Scott Johnson. All kidding aside, love your work in all aspects and this diary is, I think, a tasty little morsel that should continue.

    Keep it up Scott!

  10. Darrell

Is it cheating if I double post? I just cheated.

  11. Adrian

Someone how my comp crashes when I hit the submit comment so i’ll just repost a short version.

I listen to every podcast you create, I even put one of your podcasts on while I go to bed and in my car.

  12. andrew

To answer your question ‘HELL YES!’ I enjoy the show, I am a similar age to you and enjoy hearing your thoughts that have nothing to do with ELR or The Instance.

  13. sjefen6

Im being totaly honest, and I love everything you do! Seeing anything fade into darkess is just sad.

But me being picky; #1 You should do a diary entery when there is no weekly elr. #2 You talking in the car is 10/10 (best), You talking about the site and elr */10 (off the chart, jackpot), kid stuff 8/10 (more noice, and less like we know you from elr and The Instance). #3 You are not forcing people to listen, and they can unsubscribe!

  14. corhen

yea, i really enjoy it, i hope you continue to do it in the future

  15. Spenser

Scott: I’m sure someone has mentioned this, but from one Netflix instant junkie to another, you should check out the Walmart doc before you shop there. It’s a good watch:

I really enjoy your podcasts and I listen to them every week at work. I’ve even begun listening to your old episodes of The Instance and it’s really interesting to see how the show has grown and evolved over the years. The one thing that has been missing from those shows, however, is a little bit about their hosts. It’s really nice to get to hear a little bit about you. This diary is the perfect way to tell us about yourself so I’m glad to see that you’re going to keep it up. Also, I watched the Ustream that you put up last night when you were working on your comics and I thought that was really cool. I’m not really sure if that is something you normally do or not because I’ve never noticed it before, but it was really interesting to see how you create those comics and all the work that goes into it. Anyway, the point I’m making is this: I really enjoy listening to your shows and reading your comics and the work that you do is greatly appreciated. Thanks!.

  17. Brad

Dont stop! I love doac. Keep up all the great work you do it’s much appreciated!

  18. Tlenaab

To lose doac, would be like losing a conversation with a good pal. Not fun to even think of…

  19. gamerman

I love getting these little insights into the cartoonist as a person and not just another podcaster/webcomic artist.

  20. Matt K.

    I enjoy the diary

  21. Matt J.

I enjoy the Diary, though I miss the videos of you doing the comic. That’s what really got me interested in the Diary in the first place. More comics videos, less Wal-Mart! I do, however, enjoy your monologues about life, family, creativity and trying to balance it all in this media-rich world we live in. Keep it going!

  22. Joe

I LOVE the diary. Keep it coming.

  23. Gary Mayo

If you aren’t enjoying doing it anymore, I’d understand. However, there have been some gems in past shows that I would be sad to have missed. I would love for you to keep doing the diary if and only if you feel you still want to.

I like the diary its usually funny and I get to hear your soothing voice… lol just kidding:P but ya i like diary it good.

I think te downloads arent as much because the diaries are very short so most people just listen on their browser.

  25. Artsoldier1

This same construction situation is happening directly in front of my apartment building. Its the main road for the city and right on the northern section of the OSU campus. Needless to say it is a gigantic pain in the ass.

The diary is great. Of course I want you to continue producing them but the decision is yours. If you don’t feel like doing it anymore then I say go with that feeling, no matter how many people request it continue.

  26. Darth_yoda (UK)

Scott I really enjoy hearing your strange musings and the slightly more rough and ready feel of the diary. I agree with “shaymus22″ on this one, I also feel slightly more connected to you as if you are talking only to me telling me about your day/experiences etc. I know this is different to ELR and I am not looking for something similar to ELR. This show I feel is all about you and your family rather than the layout and main themes of ELR. I also feel that the diary is a really good way to have a more intimate dialogue with your more diehard fans. It also feels more of a treat to me when I listen to a diary as they are not on a structured timetable like ELR & The instance.

To answer your question as to whether you think you should keep the diary my answer is: HELLZ YEA!

  27. Matt

I started listening, well, watching the diary to see how you put your comics together. Even though this podcast has become more of a diary, I still enjoy it. I wouldn’t mind the occasional return to the cartooning video or even an audio-only tips and techniques chat thrown in amongst the discussions of roadworks and Walmart… but of course it’s up to you Scott, if that’s not your intention for this series, that’s fine too!

  28. Michael

Keep it going! It gives us a more in-depth look at the genius that is Scott Johnson. *thumbs up*

  29. Lord Craigly

I just found and really like the podcast. For me it is Creative Talk. I work in front of a computer hacking away, and dig having you around. Part of creativity and sharing/sparking it is just doing it. The is the Scott “Just Do It” podcast.

Also your take and views are worthwhile to me. It has value, I never wait my time, so trust it is something you should do.

I cannot put a finger on why you should keep doing it, but you really really really should. It has importance.

Also if you stop I will steal your refrigerator.

Don’t Stop Don’t Stop Don’t Stop, is that duct tape on my ….

  31. Paintguy

I take it as an audible twitter. I assume the number of downloads will let you know if you are saying anything worth listening to. As for myself, I like the very casual style you share whatever is on your mind and I find myself relating to most every subject in some way. Keep it up.

  32. Kaelthun

Just catching up on the diary. Gotta say, it’s wonderful that you do these little tidbits. It’s interesting to hear someone’s most mundane thoughts in another part of the world. It’s interesting because it’s the same, but different. That sounded better in my head, but I’ll stand by what I typed!

  33. Greg L

I know I’m a bit late to the party, and I’m glad you have seen that we appreciate Diary, but I figured I would see if I can quantify why I like it.

    1. It’s short. I love listening to podcasts when doing chore stuff around the unit (I’m 23, no family), and even if a task will take 10 minutes, I love using the time to listen to something.
    2. Your personality shows, and it is inspiring and uplifting. Unless Diary is all an act, which is highly unlikely, you are an amazingly genuine guy who is trying to be the best husband, dad and person that he can be. You have a good sense of humour, and a fun-loving attitude. In particular, your reflections on family life and fatherhood are really inspiring and honestly make me ache for when I meet my future wife and have the privilege of being a father.
    3. Great mix of topics – from the great questions of life, to the struggle of how to be a good dad (something I even think about, even though I am presumably a long way from being a father), to mundane stuff like Walmart (which is fascinating to me since we don’t have them yet in Australia).

There are other reasons I specifically gravitate towards DOAC in iTunes, I’m sure, but you get the idea. If you still have lingering doubts about doing it, despite all the positive feedback, hopefully this is one more voice to encourage you to pull out that recorder, and capture your life and musings.

Oh, and if you read this comment and appreciate the sentiments, I’d be chuffed if you sent me a thank you tweet – @greglockwood. See ya!
