This and that, and the other thing. Yep…sounds like a new Diary episode.

Oh nice,I might stream it this time. Cheers Scott

    That’s right Scott.
There are 6.6 billion people on the planet; someone is bound to not like things you do.
    Iiiiiignore them.

One practice really isn’t enough for a game. I think I had about 3+ practices in Soccer before my first game when I was 9-10. Then I had to quit after 5 years of that stuff.

  4. Lyndal

Very cool. Interesting to hear a private side of Scott. I read The Road a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I have an 11 yr old son and I think that really helped me relate to the story and the love the man has for his son. Good stuff.

Also, hope Randy gets to feeling better!

    Later,
    Lyndal.

I hear ya, dude. Some people are just too competitive. I can remember when I was a kid & used to ride horses. My trainer used to tear into me whenever I didn’t do something right & nine times out of ten I just didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing. Sounds like he had a good time playing goal, though.

Such the good dad is Diary Scott!

    1.5 Mile Run?
    225 lb Weights?

Holy cow…I break a sweat just walking outside!

Then again, it’s around 80% humidity where I live this time of year.

  7. Scott

    two 25lbs weights dude. LOL!!

I’m reluctant to comment on this coach’s attitude and coaching style when I haven’t witnessed it myself and I’m also not exactly sure on how old Nick is but I am of the opinion that when kids are starting out in proper games the only sound from the sideline should should be cheering an encouragement and that the only tactical talk should come from the coach at halftime and be spoken in such a way that it is clearly described to the kids exactly what their roles are. Sounds definately like he is well suited to goalkeeper.

Man, that is taking me back. I tried soccer when I was that age, and I was pushed around and ridiculed, which scarred me for life! Just kidding with the for life thing.
Good thing Nick has a great dad there. Soccer can be rough!

I remember being in a similar situation as a kid when I went out for a season of little leage football. I knew nothing about football. Nothing about positions or anything…it was confusing and scary and there was no real primer…it was as if they expected me to know everything once I put on the pads and jersey.

One thing I might recommend since you play allot of video games with Nick is, maybe find an easy soccer game for the Wii or PS3 that you can play with him and explain things like the positions and field areas and stuff occasionaly while you play.

I know its nothing like really being out there on the field, but it might help immerse him into the soccer culture and terminology a bit more so that he can get out there and have fun with it.

Excellent post, as usual. Thanks, Scott!

    Hi Scott,

It kinda sounds like the coach is being a bit of a jerk. One training really isn’t enough and the coach should know that. Anyway, tactics at that age should be a secondary concern. Kids that age need to gain some ball control skills first.

That being said if Nick has an interest or some talent at being a goalkeeper PLEASE ENCOURAGE IT! I don’t know how it is in the US but in the Netherlands the goalkeeping position isn’t the first place kids choose to play when given a choice of playing position (they usually prefer striker or midfielder). If he continues to develop into a good keeper he will practically be assured of a place in most youth teams.

Furthermore, keep in mind that YOU ARE 6’4! If Nick gets anywhere near that and has talent he could become a very good goalkeeper. I have seen several very talented goalkeepers over here who were great at a young age but stopped growing at 5’5 which basically destroyed any chance of them having a career as a (semi-)professional goalkeeper.

Well, thanks for the diary and keep us updated on Nicks soccer adventures,

    Michael

PS. Cantonkid’s recommendation of getting a game to help Nick is a good idea. I’d recommend Pro Evolution Soccer (Winning Eleven) or Fifa. It should help him with the terminology and give him a basic idea of player movement.

Vegas hit me kind of the same way, so much running around and stress in trying to get away for a few days. Sorry I missed a Scott and Kim hug. Your guys give great hugs.

I hope Nick enjoys playing, to me that is the most important part of the sports thing.

*hugs* thanks for being an awesome Dad and generally a fabulous person!

here in south florida school was supposed to start on monday the 18th, but the tropical storm pushed it back to wed.

I never even knew you did these. Shows how much time I’ve spen reading your blog. :( I downloaded about 6 of them though and really loved listening to them. We’re about the same age and although in different places and situations I really identify with your perspective on things. I hope you keep them up. It’s nice to listen to a podcast of someone being sincere and not pushing a product or service.

Here in Tennessee we start school a week before you.

  18. CJMack

In most of Florida, school started on the 18th (just in time for a tropical storm). But up until recently, it easily could have been even earlier. In 2006, it started on July 31! They actually had to change the law in the state so that school would start later in the year (basically sometime in August)

Back when I went to school, it seemed that school started right after Labor Day and went until early June. So that’s what makes sense to me.

Listened to the Road a few months ago and really enjoyed it. The only thing I didn’t like (kinda) was the voice the reader used for the boy. “Papa….I’m a total wuss who shouldn’t be slowin’ you down Papa.”

Heard that a film is in the works starring Hugh Jackman as “Papa.” That would be pretty freakin’ rad.

  20. Bearbutt

There are coaches that explain all the terminology and work from a position of fun and learning. This does not sound like your coach.

If you can find a different league that practices this, get into it. We did this with our older son & it made a huge difference.

the ‘old’ book people are referring to must be ‘ON THE road’ By Jack Kerouac. doh
