You lied to me

About this comic

Very happy to see the new Tomb Raider get such great reviews. I have some VERY fond memories of playing on my Saturn and PS1, the original game, and being completely blown away by it. A reboot is a dangerous thing to try, but try they did, and by all accounts thus far, they seemed to have nailed it. I’ll be nabbing the PC version in a few days. Can’t wait.

Are you sure the reviewers are not just trying to lie to you to get the game, just so they could get paid? I would put faith in the internet, would it really lie to you?

Reviewers get paid by the magazine/website publication regardless of high or low score. They get paid for the words and the trusted, well respected reviewers are paid betters than bullshit liars. So writing positive reviews doesn’t make them more money.

You literally have no idea how that system works.

Why believe a group of people who have not played the game yet over professionals who have had the whole product in their hand?

I’m not saying all games journalists are bastions of truth but they often get it right and most are just gamers themselves.

Reviewers may not be “paid to lie” per se, but there have been cases of reviewers who review things negatively getting fired.

Reviewing things positively gives the outlets they work for potential special benefits, like ad partnerships.

It’s obviously not that black and white, but you can’t deny that game companies are going to treat a reviewer better if they, you know, bump up that score by a digit or two.

Are you sure the reviewers are not just lying to you to get paid? I don’t trust people who get paid to make choices for me. I would trust the person who is on the internet before a paid reviewer.

Firefox is from the internet, he doesn’t have your best interest in his heart :)

Professional reviews will only get you so much information. Remember Diablo 3? :(

The user Metascore for D3 is nothing but whiny D2 players that wanted D2 HD, and didn’t get D2 HD. They got D3, which is not D2 much to their dismay, and my delight.

I Have never played a Tomb Raider game in the past, but this one is looking pretty snazy… may have to give it a try!

August 6, 2010 – 1:24 pm This could also be a good way to offer promotions to cuomtsers who may have seen the negative review. Offer a discount or a giveaway if the customer mentions the review. Often times business owners can explain away their mistakes but if they truly screwed up, this is one way they can make up for it.

I will trust neither reviewers nor the Internet. According to the Internet Mass Effect 3 will ruin my Childhood, turn me into a miserable and depressed being and kill my Dog. All three are alive and well.

  6. You mean the internet DOESN’T have everyone’s best interest at heart?!
