Today’s Comic: “We can never be…”

About this comic

Will our little buddy ever get with the blender? Sadly, they were never meant to be. The comic.

EDIT: You know? I am a little sad by some comments and some emails I am getting on this one. I know all about Penny Arcade’s Fruit F***** character, and it had nothing to do with the creation of this comic. My mistake was including a bowl of fruit in the image I guess. It was simply just a sad little illustration of a robot longing to be with a blender, and not being able to fulfill that dream. Nothing more.

You could probably accuse me of finding inspiration in Wall-E I guess, but anyway. I was not aware that anyone anywhere had the exclusivity rights on robot portrayal. Are we that jaded? Also, the assumption that I was going for “funny” with this comic strikes me as odd. I was actually going for slightly sad this time around, and shame on me for not succeeding.

Simply put, this was not something I “took” from anyone, I was just simply drawing an idea that was on my mind. Can’t help those who don’t take me at my word.

    Penny Arcade FF reference?

  2. Scott says:

    no…you see a resemblance?

  3. Cantonkid says:

This gets me in the mood to see Wall-e, which just started today in Hong Kong. :)

Oh and on the subject of romance and inanimate technology, did I read correctly (from Twitter) that you got the prized i-Phone??? Congratulations, and let me say I am Hulk-green with envy. Can we see a picture??? pretty please!;)

  4. mercator says:

LOL Gwil I was thinking the same thing. Not by resemblance, just love and fruit conveniently close to the blender.

Good memory since I gave up Penny Arcade a while ago.

  5. Jim says:

It actually reminds me of this story I read last week called ‘And the Dish Ranaway with the Spoon” by Paul Di Filippo. Its all about intellegent home appliences and what happens when they start to communicate with each other… then is gets a bit wierd.

  6. krasch says:

Reminds me of a Futurama episode.. Bender standing outside a window looking in, a woman sitting at a computer and Bender is making comments about how hot she is (the computer, offcourse..
Anyone remember what episode that is? o_O

  7. Eric says:

It’s better for him that way. She’d just chew him up and spit him out. She’s a man-eater… or whatever.

(These weird ones will always keep me coming back.)

  8. My first thought was Penny Arcade’s FF as well, my eyes went from the robot to the bowl of fruit before I even registered the blender.

Given that there is really no real resemblance between this robot and the FF, I guess this just says something about me.

  9. Barry T says:

It made me think of the Colorado “alien” footage being bandied about by Jeff Peckman.

  10. inkBot says:

The episode of futurama is “Mar’s University”. It is when fry enrolls in the University so he can drop out. Bender joins his old robot frat, Epsilon Rho Rho, to show them how to do it up right. They are using a regulation 2 story panty raid ladder to peak into the girls dorm when he spys the computer.

I had the same thought as Void, went from the bowl of fruit to the robot and thought FF, didn’t register the blender until looking at it again.

  11. TPNDrew says:

Bender and Blender sitting in a tree…

  12. Nazz says:

AAAAAAAAAAAAANND IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WIIIIIIIIIIIILL ALWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYS LOOOOOOOOOOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUU

  13. LOL. Nicely done Scott.

  14. JoyfulAnn says:

Yeah, I too looked at the bowl of fruit, then the robot, first, and was like huh? and then saw the blender. Must be the red making the fruit pop, even though you’d think the blender with that halo of light around it would draw enough attention to itself.

  15. HECTORtheTURTLE says:

This one truly made me LOL. I loved it.

  16. Samantha Jane says:

    Awww *hugs* for Scottypants!

  17. Maleldil says:

I love the style on this one. Very vibrant and beautiful, but simple and succinct.

  18. GoofyMonkey says:

But if they did get together.. “Will it blend?”

  19. Zorbane says:

Haha GoofyMonkey, I thought the same thing.

  20. GRPeng says:

With all the Superman strips lately, my thoughts went downhill as I remembered an old cartoon with Supe pressing the open top of the blender into his…

  21. Doomula says:

I’m sorry, this is just stupid. All of your comics suffer from poor writing and lack of creativity.

  22. Gwil says:

Not really a resemblance. Guess I equate fruit+robot with the FF. I’ll admit I too saw the fruit first.

  23. NeuroMan42 says:

    Get out of my head.

  24. mercator says:

    @Doomula:

Wow, Jimmy. And yet you took the time to look through them all.

  25. Tyler says:

now this one cracks me up :)

  26. Bronco says:

“forbidden love” was the first thing that i thought of when i saw this

    i love it

  27. Quegon says:

being a nerd and robot lover myself, I kinda find this sad… but at the same time I love it :P

    Quegon

  28. Lord Zeon says:

Totally that the robot was a Mr. Handy for a second.

  29. Doomula says:

    @Mercator

There is no Jimmy here, only Zuul.

  30. bizrey says:

Not just a bowl of fruit — a SUGGESTIVE bowl of fruit! XD

  31. MMO Moogle says:

Man, I can’t believe some of you.

I’m a huge fan of Scott’s work, but even I can admit that this particular comic is very lacking in creativity.

This type of joke has been done since the first episode of Futurama and Scott doesn’t really add any spin to the concept.

I’m not trying to pick on Scott. He’s a veteran cartoonist and I’m sure he’s has comic artist’s block once in awhile and does random stuff like this. Everybody gets stuck in a rut at times.

I just roll of my eyes at the people who say that this comic makes them ROFL? Seriously? Have you been living under a rock for the past decade?

  32. Eric Covington says:

Wow. Is everything just a penny arcade reference to people now? Its like Butter’s friend sitting there saying “Simpsons did it!” to every one of his plans for world domination.

However, i will say that once i first saw it, it did remind me of something. Not penny arcade, but another comic strip called http://simulatedcomicproduct.com/

But thats simply because a majority of the strips are about robots, and are of simple, irony based jokes of the like. Its a pretty nice comic.

Strip unrelated but a good one. ^^

  33. Shaymus22 says:

OMG SCOTT U TOTALLY LEIK STOLED THE FROOT FRUM ALL TEH FROOT OF THE LOOM COMERSHULS OMG U R A COMMUNIST

lol…Seriously, people? Give the guy a break. He’s the one people steal ideas from.

  34. Bobacus says:

Personally Scott. I would have went with a coffee maker. coffee makers are just more sexy. ;)

  35. Scott says:

    that’s a good point. :)

  36. vyskol says:

    People are dumb.
It’s obvious that both Scott and Penny Arcade are ripping off Picasso!

  37. Joonas says:

Scott is totally ripping off Transformers :P

  38. Emily says:

“My mistake was including a bowl of fruit in the image”. When you have to say something like that, I guess we’ve gotten a little over-sensitive as a society. XD

  39. Scott is totally ripping off his explanation from Vettriano. ;)

  40. Pineapple Farmer says:

Hey, Scott it’s the internet, you will get critisism both positive and negative no matter what. So wipe that tear away and grow a pair! YOU created it, stand by your work!

  41. BrianD says:

Scott, don’t worry about how people just associate your work with other people’s work.

It’s not the first time people have made this association due to the similarity of the subject matter.

    Check this out:
    http://alexiuss.deviantart.com/journal/

He goes over this exact same topic.

  42. Lord Zeon says:

Penny Arcade is not exactly a great comic anyways… Kinda retarded, actually. I think, Scott, that you shouldn’t worry about the opinions of the kind of people who are THAT familiar with Penny Arcade.

  43. British Boy says:

    Whats wrong with some people?
I’ve probably been living under a rock but i don’t get what everyone is on about.
The first thing i thought was of Wall-E and EVE, but in a present day sense. I don’t get whats wrong with people, again.
(By the way, does Wall-E (the movie) say that everything will be Mac in the future?)

  44. RacerX says:

Wow, Jackals! All of them! But seriously, don’t lose sleep over this. Your comic sucks, its no the first time your work has been lackluster. Sadly, it appears that your audience has voiced their opinion. Now take it and do something better. We are the stone that sharpens your blade!

  45. Holy crap. There are some real ass-munches saying hurtful, ignorant things in here. I expect to hear a “Diary” soon that talks about how Scott J isn’t going to read comments anymore, or how he might just turn comments off. The thought would cross my mind.

Jeez, its a freakin’ comic with a robot that looks like a bunch of other robots… and either you get it or you don’t. *sheesh*

  46. ziv's dad says:

Wow! I thought I was reading comments on Youtube for a momment there!

Don’t let the morons get to you Scott. To paraphrase something I read in Sim City back in the day “The Nay Sayers will always say Nay”. The comic is fine. In fact it ranks right up there with some of your best work.

  47. Scott says:

    Thanks for the support, guys.
