You wondered if maybe Hollywood’s bad portrayals and terrible graphics ruined the public for even caring about VR at all. I actually think it was Star Trek.

Back in 1987 they came up with a Holodeck which in fake science is basically illusions made solid. In implementation it was nothing more complicated than a sound stage, which is what studios had been doing for decades. In other words if you ‘bought’ the TV show then you could buy their fake tech because it was exactly the same thing.

I haven’t heard anyone say anything about VR for years, and I think it’s because everyone realizes it will just be crap compared to the fictional version. Any real VR that someone can come up with in the foreseeable future is just pointless and not good enough.

The content is there (movie theaters usually play 4k). Also, with the HD transition, the big hurdle was moving from analogue to digital.

I don’t think there will be a rush to 8k. It’ll be similar to the adoption of Blu-Ray. Most will see 4k as good enough for a while.
