You have to be freaking kidding me.
“What we love about this is we hopefully get the best of both worlds,” Mr. Howe said. “We’ll get the heritage and the track record of success, and we’ll build off of that to build a broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand.”

Let’s appeal to everybody by denying and alienating our target audience.
Yep. Uhh, huh. Good call!
Yeah, the rebranding will probably include a change in lineup. We can look to lose the shows that we tuned in for and more reality crap. Maybe even something like wrestling! (I am looking at you G4)
@JT – As a designer, I agree that the new mark is a vast improvement. As a nerd, I’ll miss that ugly old logo.
I’ll visit it from time to time on my MST3K tapes.
What bothers me the most is the flagrant use of BS marketing lingo in the article:
“We really do want to OWN the imagination space…much cooler, much more CUTTING-EDGE, much more HIP, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise…It is a DRAMEDY and it is set in the here and now…It’s a CALL TO ACTION…Look at the everyday and how you can turn it to the extraordinary”
BLEH indeed.
(Aside from that jerk, I am kinda interested in this MMO + TV show project)
“human-friendly”?! What am I? A Frakkin’ toas– ooh nooo!
So, they hired the same folks that came up with “Gleemax”, “Wii”, “Longhorn” and “Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale”. If they change completely to “SyFy Chanl” u no thyd pwn teh r8tings dude. ur namd daht? ur uber l337!
What REALLY grinds my gears is that the clueless suits that come up with this CRAP are paid ten times more than people who know what they’re doing, actually live on THIS planet and work for a living.
Shed their geeky image ? ? ! Who the crap do they think watches their content? What audience are they aiming for? Trendy air heads who can ” leverage the synergy of thinking outside the box?”
This is lipstick on a pig.
sounds like slang for syphilus.
I feel the exact same way about this as I did when the whole internet started whining at each other about the name of the Wii. They could rename their network The “Fuck You, Rex” Channel, and I’d still tune in so long as they’re showing something I want to watch.
One word: LAME!!!!!
From the article: “The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that.” Umm, yes. That’s pretty much what I am, and if SciFi/SyFy/CeiFei/SaiFai/WTF they call themselves decide to go for the “broader audience,” they’ll lose their core viewers – dorks like me. To me, “broadening appeal” sounds like trying to lump in with USA/WGN/all the other dime-a-dozen mediocre cable networks. If they change the name and leave the programming the same, then what’s the point? If they change the programming, they’ll lose the viewers they have. Stupid.
Do they even know what a geek is ? (int: it’s not a SMS kid with some short attention span.)
SyFy = 100% more wrestling.
Maybe I can become cool too and change my acoustic system’s name to HyFy or my wireless to WyFy, or….ah forget it, let me just say ByBy.
Once again….
Men getting paid too much money,
to make decisions about things,
for which they haven’t got a clue.
The SciFi channel has really been going downhill in recent years.
All they ever show now are B-grade horror films and Ghost Hunters.
I believe it all started when they put wrestling on there.
Seefee? Huh?
…
Then again, what should I expect from a company that keeps showing disgusting The Asylum blockbuster rip-offs?
Wow. Major. Epic. Fail.
The truth is, “SyFy” has been hemoraging their viewers at an alarming rate. Aside from a single show that only they air, they have absolutely nothing to speak of, and that show has a single episode left! As for reruns, you don’t need “SyFy” for the reruns of the only shows that were ever good. So why not toss out their entire viewing demographic…it’s not like they gave a rat’s butt about their next lame *** made for TV Movie. *Salute* Alas old Sci-Fi you will be missed. I need to make a life-sized version of the “new” logo and burn it in honor of what once was a good channel.
Does no one watch Eureka? Yes, Battlestar is ending, but the rest of season 3 (probably going to be called season 4 because it has been so long) of Eureka is supposed to start airing soon. And Caprica will show up eventually. I agree that going from Scifi to Syfy is mentally retarded, but I hope some people will actually watch the programming that is intelligent and deserves the title of Science Fiction. Otherwise they might just stop making it altogether.
I read that as “We are a little ashamed of our core demo (geeks&nerds) and we want more of those braindead people that the other networks get. Don’t take this the wrong way – we still like the money you generate, we just don’t want you to scare the cool kids away”.
We can still be together, just don’t tell anybody!
Doesn’t bother me. As long as they keep playing Mansquito I don’t care what they call themselves. They could go with Turd Sandwich for that matter. I’m still watching no matter what. C’mon Dinocrock!
